Class Number Grid Activity

What math series does everyone use? Our district adopted Everyday Mathematics. This is our 3rd year with it, and I am not going to lie, I still do not love it... I am still trying to like it, but right now I feel like I am just living with it because we have to. {However, whenever the software for my Smartboard gets installed, I cannot WAIT to use all the cool interactive stuff the series provides! It will make teaching the series a WHOLE lot easier and more enjoyable!}

A big component of that series is the Number Grid.

They really want the students to use it with their adding and subtracting. So we spent the past two days just getting familiar with the Number Grid, learning that if we add 10, we "go down," subtracting 10, we "go up," etc.

Today we had our kiddos work in groups to put a cut up Number Grid puzzle together. They had to look at the numbers to figure out what pieces went where. We did 8 different grids (1-100, 101-200, 201-300 and so on).

The kids really loved this activity, and it helped a lot of them with the concept of the "Missing Number Grid" {which we will see a lot in our math boxes).

This was a quick, fun, hands-on activity that the kids really enjoyed, and we can put out for them to practice in their free time!!

HAPPY WEEKEND, FRIENDS!!!

Speak Like a Pirate Day!

Ahoy, me hearties! Did you know that today is "Speak Like a Pirate Day?" Our school theme this year is "Learning is a Treasure" and we are doing more of a pirate theme! So over the summer I had emailed my principal to tell her about this little "holiday.." Wellllll I totally forgot about it until afternoon announcements yesterday!!! I felt bad, because I was so pumped up about doing all kinds of pirate stuff all day long! But we have been so into our plant unit that it just slipped my mind.... Story of my life!

 So, Amy and I whipped up a little writing/craftivity for this afternoon. It is nothing earth shattering, but it was cute enough :) And the kids liked it {and they had no idea that their teachers almost forgot about the "holiday!"}

We read these books, which I just LOVE!

Then we had the kids write about why or why not they'd want to be a pirate. Then they got to make one of these cute little guys:

Anyway, just a quick and easy activity that the kids really enjoyed! Have a wonderful evening :)

Mapping Our World! {Freebie!}

Hey all! I hope everyone has has had a great week! It feels like fall here today and I am LOVING it!! We have started working on plants this week, but I have not taken photos yet, so I will share a quick activity we did last week with our mapping skills! {Get the FREEBIE at the end of the post!}

Before we really started mapping, we read

It's a cute story that is a wonderful intro to mapping skills! It teaches all the parts of a map {title, map key, compass rose, etc.} It also teaches about different kinds of maps. We practiced our directions, taught them "Never Eat Sour Watermelons," and made some maps together as a class.

Then I typed up some directions, and as a group they had to make a map of a community. They had to come up with a title, draw the compass rose, and come up with the symbols for their map key. Then they had to follow the checklist of directions to construct their map! They did an awesome job!

Click HERE to get your mapping activity FREEBIE {You get the directions to construct the map, a blank map key and blank title template}.

Apple Graph FREEBIE!

Hey all! Amy and I were kind of getting an overview of next few weeks, and we realized it's almost time for Apple Week in honor of Johnny Appleseed! I am working on re-vamping some of my apple stuff, and I wanted to share a FREEBIE with you all!

I always like to make an apple graph with my kiddos. I send a note home asking parents to send an apple to school with their child. Then we graph the apples we brought! Click on the picture below to pick up your FREE graphs and parent note!
{Please be sure to follow my store and leave feedback if you download!}

I also have my kids measure their apples in standard and nonstandard units. They wrap yarn around the apple and measure the yarn. You could also have them weigh the apples. Then I like to make applesauce for a yummy treat :)

Pssssst.....don't forget your apple themed math journal prompts! Pick them up HERE :)

ENJOY!

Giveaway Time!

Hi friends! Are you all so excited that it is a three day weekend? I am! I finally went back to school yesterday and I am glad I did. I needed to get out of the house and get my mind off of things. My kiddos were so excited to see me and had lots of cards and bucket fillers for me. Love them! However, it sure is nice to have a three day weekend before I really go back. I plan on taking it easy this weekend, getting caught up on things, and just getting back to "normal."

My spririts are up today, so in honor of that {and a three day weekend!} I would love to give away your choice of....

The first person to guess which reality show marathon I have been watching all day will get their choice of math journal prompts. Be sure to leave your email address :)
