We finished our biography unit this week and the kids have done an AWESOME job! This was the first year that we've done an actual biography unit, but we will definitely continue doing it for years to come because the kids have been soooo into it! {We can tell it's been a hit because they are all checking out biographies from the library! LOVE IT!}

We read many biographies to our kids and then they filled out a page in their biography journal about each person.

We did 6 pages, including MLK, Helen Keller, Rosa Parks, JFK, Cesar Chavez and Susan B. Anthony. I totally forgot to take a picture of their journals! But they did great and were really into it!

Our awesome PTA purchased this set of biographies for our classroom this year:

We were so excited to let our kids research someone famous! I have been waiting and waiiiiiting to get out this set of books! They were perfect for our 2nd graders! We got our kids into groups of 6 and assigned them a person to research. They had to read the books in their groups and decide what facts were important and then they had to make a poster. I just took the components from their biography journals and enlarged them. The kids did an AMAZING job working together! It was so cool to hear their discussions as they were reading their biography, and every group worked so well together :) Amy and I were proud!

Here are a couple of the posters! I apologize for the quality... I guess we could've given them smaller pieces of butcher paper :)

{Harriet Tubman}

{Abraham Lincoln}

{Squanto}

This week we also interviewed staff members at our school, and then wrote biographies about them! This idea came from Amy Lemons and we used all her free printables!! The kids LOVED this project!

Next week we are starting our Space Unit! I am soooo excited! :) Have a great weekend!

Biography Freebie!

This weekend has been CRAZY busy for the hubby and me! I swear that everything is going on in Oklahoma City this weekend so we have been on the go, go, go. We went to our Arts Festival Friday night (and it was a perfect night for it!), we went to the Norman Music Festival all day yesterday, and today Todd ran the Memorial Marathon Relay with his family. Needless to say, I have done absolutely nothing school related this weekend.

I did want to share a FREEBIE with you all that I used this past week! We spent the week learning about biographies. We discussed information that biographies typically include and read several biographies together. Each day, I had the students fill out a page in their Biography Journal so they could record their learning. Click here to get your copy of the journal :)

Then as a culminating activity, the students had to interview an adult family member about his/her life. Then they came back to school and we worked on writing a biography about that person. I am so bummed that I didn't photograph their work because they did a great job!

Down to 19 days! We will be doing some fun activities these last weeks with some of my favorite books... Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, Miss Nelson is Missing, and Where the Wild Things Are!! And we will all do our best to make it to summer :)
