Landform Fun!

Happy Wednesday! There are still a few hours left of the TPT Teacher Appreciation Sale! Click HERE to check out some products in my store! You can get them 28% off with code THANKYOU!

We started learning about landforms last week and the kids seemed to enjoy it! After we discussed each landform, we made these cute little craftivities! The original idea was from Mrs. Nicolau, and we just modified it a bit! She has a great freebie that you can use!

Today, for our first balloon pop activity, we did our Edible Landforms Project! As always, it was a big hit! We tweaked it a little bit this year because we did not have parents send the items-we had lots of leftovers from other activities, so we were trying to use up the food we had! We did not use tortillas this year; we just had the kids trace the United States on the plate and put icing right on the plate. It worked perfectly! We also used the off brand Fruit Loops instead of M&Ms. It saved us quite a bit of money :) The kids did an awesome job! Here's a sample!

You can pick up this activity by clicking below! It is only $1 in my TPT store! It includes all the templates, map keys, parent note, teacher directions...everything you would need!

I hope you're surviving the end of the year! We are in the home stretch, friends!

Edible Landforms Project!

Wow. It has been a sweet minute since I posted. I feel like baby girl has been consuming a lot of my free time, whether it be shopping, registering, or just reading up on pregnancy! We decided on a name... Mia Nicole! I am currently 24 weeks.... which means she will be here in 16 weeks.... which doesn't sound all that far away!!

I am a little ashamed to admit that I have been horrible about taking pictures during class, because I am normally really on top of it! But I actually did today because I told myself that I would blog today, even if it was just a short post :)

We have been learning about Oklahoma, the continents and oceans, and landforms. Today we made our much anticipated Edible Landforms Project!

Student materials.

Student example.

We used everything in my mini pack. In this project, students create the following important US landforms: Rocky Mountains, Appalachian Mountains, Mississippi River, the Great Lakes, the Great Plains, and Hawaii. This pack includes detailed teacher directions, a note to send home for materials, all the printables and templates you need, and photos of the project! I promise your kids will have a blast making this US map and will have a good grasp on landforms! Ours agreed that this was waaaaay better than just making a map on paper :)

You pick up your copy for $1 in my little store by clicking HERE or on the picture below!

Edible Landforms Project!

I am not going to lie... Since I can remember, I have always thought Social Studies was pretty boring and blah, especially when it comes to Geography. It is probably my least favorite subject to teach. One skill we must teach is about landforms and specific US landforms. How do you make that fun?! Well, just make it yummy, of course!! After reading some books, looking at some maps, and looking at a powerpoint presentation about landforms {BORING}, we made THESE!

Omiword! The kids flipped for this, and I am pretty sure they have a really good grasp on different US landforms :) In my new Edible Landforms Project mini-pack, you will get detailed teacher directions, templates and printables. Check it out by clicking {HERE} or by clicking the picture below!

As always, I will be giving a copy away! Just leave me a comment and don't forget your email! And if you don't win, you're in luck-this is only a buck!

Edible Landforms!

This week we have been learning about our great state of Oklahoma, and I decided it would be perfect to tie in landforms. We started off by reading about landforms in our social studies. Then we made the much anticipated EDIBLE LANDFORMS! The kids LOVED this! It tested my patience a bit :) but it was worth it when one of my sweeties said, "Mrs. Lynes, thank you for the best day of my LIFE!!!" Ha.

I have great parental support this year, so I assigned each child an item to bring for the project. And of course there were leftovers, so they got a little BIG sugar fix :)

Items needed are as follows:

--Template of the US traced and cut out on cardstock (I had 8 for my kids to share)
--1 tortilla per child
--2 paper plates per child (1 for candy, 1 for tortilla)
--1 plastic knife/popsicle stick per child (depending on your kids, haha)
--tubs of white icing (I used a little more than 2 tubs for 24 kids)
--Pull and Peel Twizzlers (I gave each child 1/2 of one)
--white chocolate chips
--regular chocolate chips
--gumdrops OR dots candies
--m&ms (5 BLUE for Great Lakes, 1 RED for Oklahoma {or your state!})
--coconut dyed with green food color

I prepared my plates during lunch time. It really did not take long. I would suggest seperating your red and blue m&ms beforehand though!

Look at the map key below to see what each food item represents.

The kids will be able to eat all the candy and sugary goodness off of this after they share their project with a family member. Since they traced the US with marker, they were told not to eat the tortilla :) They learned a lot and had a great time. Mrs. Lynes is tired though! Ha.
