Milk Carton Communities, Map Skills and a FREEBIE!

TGI{almost}F! I am so ready for a three day weekend! This week has flown by, just as this new school year has! We have been having a lot of fun with our 2nd graders :) This is going to be a big old social studies/geography post!

We have been learning about different communities and have started our mapping skills! We read the story Iris and Walter from our basal to learn the difference between the city and country. Then we learned the fancy names to describe those communties: urban and rural! {I just love hearing our sweeties say "rural!"} We read another story from our basal called I Like Where I Am because it let the students see the suburbs! We made venn diagrams and sorted descriptions of each community on our bulletin board.

Then we made our adorable milk carton communities, which was a big hit. It looks like our skyscrapers are blowing in the wind, whoops :)

Cute, right?! Today we started our mapping skills and went over map titles and map keys. We mapped our milk carton communities and the kids did a great job!

For the next few days we will be working on mapping skills. We will read the book Mapping Penny's World and the kiddos will each make a map of our classroom! Then they will work in small groups and use my Mapping Our World! freebie to make a map of a town! This really allows them to work on their cardinal directions. Pick up your FREE copy by clicking on the picture below :) You can totally tell I made this back at the start of my TpT days! HA!

If you download this, let me know what you think! Enjoy your three day weekend, friends :)

This week we worked on our iPad getting to know you craftivity! And I just LOVED the way they turned out! The kids thought these were the coolest things ever :) And they really took pride in their work! We split this up into two days, which helped our sweeties tremendously :) On the first day they drew their apps, then they did their writing the next day. This craftivity can be found in my Back to School MEGA Pack.

Welp, that is it for me. I am ready to enjoy my weekend! I hope everyone has an amazing, restful, fun weekend!!

We Like Ourselves! {Giveaway Ends Sooooon!}

I cannot begin to tell you how tired I am today. I really think I could fall asleep right now and not wake up until my alarm went off tomorrow morning!! Did I mention that it's not even 5:00?!  My allergies have been bad today, and the medicine always makes me soooooo sleepy!!! So this post is going to be SUPER quick!

I just wanted to share a quick beginning of the year activity we did that you can find from my Back to School MEGA Pack! We read I Like Myself and then made these cute little posters :)

If you bought this pack, look for an updated version-I  noticed that I have "I'm good at..." a lot :) So I am changing that. I also noticed a little typo on the iPad craftivity! So if you purchased it, please re-download it!

2nd Day of 2nd Grade and 200 TpT Follwer GIVEAWAY!

Just a reminder that there are a few hours left of the big back to school sale on TpT! Everything in my store is up to 28% off with promo code BTS13 :)

Today was a really good day with our new 2nd graders! We did a lot of community building and worked on our first craftivity!

First, we read one of my favorite back to school books, Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. After we read the book, we graphed the syllables in our names. We gave each kiddo a sticky note and had them write their names on them. The kids took turns saying their names, and as a class we counted the syllables in each child's name. Then they hung up their sticky note in the appropriate column. This activity also let us review each other's names :)

Due to time, we didn't have the kids make their own graphs, but I do have everything you would need in my Fun With Kevin Henkes & Friends! pack! After we made our class graph, we worked on the cute craftivity to go along with the book {you can find it in Fun With Kevin Henkes & Friends! or in my Back to School MEGA Pack!}! Students had to count the number of letters, consonants, vowels, and syllables in their names. Then they wrote why their name was special. Some of their responses were PRECIOUS!! I am sharing some of my favorites with you :)

I like my name because I'm named after a movie star.

I like my name because I am named after Esther in the Bible.

I like my name because my name sounds good.

I like my name because it is named after Reese's Puffs.

 I like my name because I am named after my great grandpa.

I like my name because my name is named after a baseball player's last name.

In the afternoon, we read Have You Filled a Bucket Today? and talked all about bucket filling!! I think this is such an important subject to spend time on because it really helps build an awesome classroom community! After we read and discussed the book, Amy demonstrated how hurtful words or actions can't be taken back, even if we say sorry. She squeezed out some toothpaste each time a child gave an example of bucket dipping. After most of the toothpaste was squeezed out, we called students up to try and put the toothpaste back in tube {using toothpicks}. It was hard to do, and we couldn't put the toothpaste back. I think the kids really got it :)

Then we made two anchor charts; bucket dippers and bucket fillers. Our class decided that we should crumple up the Bucket Dippers chart and throw it away!

The last thing we did was work on was the Bucket Filling and Bucket Dipping sort that can be found in my Back to School MEGA Pack! The kids did great! I am so excited to start letting the kids fill each other's buckets :)

Tomorrow we are going to start our first day of Daily 5! We use Daily 5 for Dummies to help us pace our lessons :) It is definitely worth it to google it, especially if you are just starting out!! I will post more about that soon!

GIVEAWAY TIME!!! A couple weeks ago, you all helped me get to 200 followers in my TpT Store! THANK YOU!!! :) I can't wait to do the same thing on this little blog of mine :) I promised you a giveaway! The winner will get TWO items! Monday Made It with a FREEBIE :)

I am linking up with Tara one last time this summer for Monday Made It! I am posting a day early because with the way things have been going the past week, I probably won't get around to it tomorrow! You should link up, too!! I love to see what everyone is making :)

Our school theme this year is "Teaming Up for Success!" I am so excited because it's the perfect excuse to Thunder Up all year long :) {Gotta represent our Oklahoma City Thunder!} I made this banner for outside our rooms. We are going to write our kiddos' names on little basketballs and hang them up on the walls around this banner. I just love the way it turned out!

I made tags for our drawers and my sweet got them all ready for us! They match perfectly with my green and blue decor :) Pick up a free copy {HERE} or by clicking on the pictures below!

Each student will have his/her own drawer. We will put different activities, flash cards, practice sheets, games, etc. in their drawers, based on their needs. So if little Sally needs to work on her subtraction facts, we may put a subtraction wrap up in her drawer. If little Johnny needs some enrichment, we may give him some multiplication Hot Dots cards. Kids will also keep any unfinished work in there {we have tables, not individual desks}.We are so excited to use this system! It will be an easy way to differentiate and make sure our kiddos are working on things they need to! {See original idea HERE}

I made these two posters the other day! I've seen so many teachers and bloggers with their own versions, so I needed some, too! :) I think they will be great reminders while our kiddos are reading.

And you all, don't worry-I have NOT forgotten about my 200 TpT follower giveaway :) Things have been pretty crazy busy lately. I WILL do it soon!
